needles

At your first visit, I will review your health history and identify your main complaints. Next, I will read your pulse and observe your tongue. Based on these observations, I will diagnose pattern of imbalance and determine what treatments would be most beneficial.

Treatment modalities may include acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, Qi Gong or herbal therapy.

In a typical acupuncture session, I will insert 10-20 needles. The needles are very thin and most people feel nothing more than a slight pin prick at insertion. Many people feel very relaxed and may fall asleep after the needles are inserted. I leave the needles in for 20-45 minutes. The first visit will generally last 60-100 minutes.

For most chronic conditions, I recommend treatment 1-2 times per week for 6+ weeks. For more acute conditions, I may recommend more frequent visits for 1-3 weeks.

I use acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine to support mothers in achieving a joyful, smooth experience. If you do experience discomfort or disease, acupuncture is an ideal drug-free treatment for many problems.

During pregnancy
Acupuncture or Traditional Chinese Medicine may

  • Reduce discomfort with conditions that are considered a normal part of pregnancy including nausea, vomiting, heartburn, restless legs, back pain, sciatic pain, headaches, and carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Maintain healthy blood pressure
  • Promote restful sleep
  • Lessen constipation, hemorrhoids, urinary tract infections, anxiety, and depression
  • Help turn babies that are breech or posterior using moxibustion (the warming of an acupuncture point by holding burning mugwort near the point). Usually done between 33-37 weeks.
  • Induce labor or promote cervical ripening if medically necessary

Prebirth Acupuncture
I regularly treat pregnant mothers weekly from 36 weeks onward to encourage a smooth labor and delivery. These calming treatments help ripen the cervix, relax tendons and ligaments to allow the baby to descend into the pelvis, boost energy level in preparation for labor, and lessen the chance of going over the due date. Women who receive prebirth treatments have been shown to have shorter labors and deliveries.

During Labor and Delivery
Acupuncture may

  • Reduce pain and discomfort
  • Shorten labor
  • Increase energy level
  • Enhance uterine contractions and dilation of cervix
  • Reduce blood loss
  • Help deliver the placenta

After birth
Acupuncture or herbs may

  • Reduce afterbirth pains
  • Promote flow and production of breastmilk
  • Smooth and shorten bleeding
  • Ease depression or anxiety
